Frequently Asked Questions

Spray Foam Insulation Questions

How much does it cost to spray foam a house in Macon?

National guides list about $1.50 to $5.00 per square foot installed. HomeGuide puts a whole house at $8,000 to $20,000, and an attic roof deck at $1,500 to $9,000. We measure and send a written price.

What is the code for wall insulation in Georgia?

Georgia's residential energy code, the 2015 IECC with Georgia amendments, lists R-13 for wood-frame walls in Climate Zones 2 through 4, which covers Macon. Ceilings are R-38. That applies to new construction and additions.

Can mold grow behind spray foam insulation?

Foam does not feed mold, but if it covers a leak or wet wood, moisture can be trapped. That is why we fix leaks and dry out surfaces first, and why closed cell is used where moisture is a risk.

Should I encapsulate my crawl space in Middle Georgia?

Many vented crawl spaces here get damp in summer. Sealing the vents, laying a heavy liner and drying the space often helps, but water entry and termite inspection access have to be handled first. Sometimes insulating the floor is the better choice.

Open cell or closed cell for my attic?

For foam on the roof deck over attic ductwork, open cell is common and costs less. On the attic floor, sealing plus blown-in is usually the better value. Closed cell makes sense where space is tight or moisture is a concern.

Does Georgia Power offer insulation rebates?

Georgia Power's Home Energy Improvement Program lists rebates for attic insulation and air sealing, with rules on existing insulation levels and installer requirements. Check the program page for current amounts before you plan.

Spray Foam Insulation Questions

Is spray foam worth it in Georgia's climate?

Where heat and humid air leaking in are the main problems, often yes, especially for attics with ductwork. On a simple attic floor, sealing plus blown-in usually gives similar comfort for less.

Can foam go over old insulation?

Not usually. Foam must bond to wood or concrete, so old batts in the way come out first.

Will foam affect my termite bond?

It can if it hides areas your pest company needs to inspect. Talk to them before foam goes on foundation walls, and we will plan inspection access.

How long does spray foam last?

Installed correctly and kept dry, it lasts for the life of the framing it is attached to.

Crawl Space Encapsulation & Insulation Questions

Will encapsulation void my termite bond?

It can if inspection areas get covered. Check with your pest control company first. We leave inspection access and can work to their requirements.

Do I need a dehumidifier?

Most sealed crawl spaces need some drying. We recommend a dehumidifier or conditioned air based on your house.

Is floor insulation enough?

For some homes, yes. Closed-cell foam under the floor keeps the house comfortable even if the crawl space stays vented.

How long does the work take?

Most crawl spaces take one to three days.

Attic Insulation & Air Sealing Questions

How much attic insulation do I need in Macon?

Georgia's code lists R-38 for new homes. For existing attics, the Department of Energy suggests R-49 to R-60 if bare, or adding R-38 to R-49 over what is there.

Will a Georgia Power rebate cover part of the job?

It may. The program has rules about existing insulation, the R-value you reach and who does the air sealing. Check Georgia Power's page for current terms before you plan.

Why is my upstairs so hot?

Thin insulation, ceiling air leaks and ducts in a hot attic are the usual causes.

How long does attic work take?

Most sealing and blow-in jobs take a day. Roofline foam may take longer.

Insulation Removal & Replacement Questions

Do I need to remove old insulation first?

Not if it is clean and dry. We remove insulation that is wet, contaminated or in the way of sealing.

How long does removal take?

Most attic or crawl space jobs take one to two days with reinsulation.

Is rodent-contaminated insulation dangerous?

It should be removed with protective equipment and containment, which is how we handle it.

Can you remove spray foam?

Yes, slowly. Fixr lists about $1.50 to $3 per square foot, up to about $5 when chipped by hand.

Wall Insulation Questions

Can you insulate plaster walls?

Usually, through small holes that get plugged and patched. We check for fire blocking and old wiring first.

What about brick homes?

Brick veneer walls can often be filled from inside. We look at each house.

Will wall insulation help in summer?

Yes, especially on walls that face the afternoon sun.

How long does it take?

One to three days for most homes.

Blown-In Insulation Questions

Cellulose or fiberglass for a Georgia attic?

Both work. Cellulose resists air movement better, fiberglass handles moisture better. We suggest one and can price both.

How long does blown-in take?

Most attics are done in a day.

Will blown-in settle?

Slightly. We install to the settled depth for your target R-value.

Can blown-in go over old insulation?

Yes, if the old insulation is dry and clean.
