Older Walls Usually Have Little Inside
Wall insulation is a natural next step after the attic in many older Macon homes. More than half of Macon's houses were built before 1980, and older ones, like the 1920s bungalows of Shirley Hills or the cottages of Pleasant Hill, often have little or no insulation in the walls. On summer afternoons, sun-facing walls warm the rooms behind them.
Existing walls: dense-pack
For closed walls, we usually recommend dense-pack cellulose. A small hole is drilled into each stud bay from inside or outside, the cavity is filled at high density, and the hole is plugged and patched. HomeGuide lists dense-pack at $1.60 to $4.20 per square foot. Brick homes can often be filled from the inside.
Open walls: spray foam
During remodels and additions, open stud bays can be sprayed. Fixr lists new-construction wall foam at $2.75 to $6.50 per square foot and existing walls at $3.15 to $7.50. Georgia's code lists R-13 for wood-frame walls.
Before we drill
We check for old wiring, signs of leaks and any historic finishes you want protected. Knob-and-tube wiring should be dealt with by an electrician before walls are filled.
Garage and bonus room walls
Walls between the house and garage and the kneewalls around bonus rooms are often under-insulated in newer homes too. Get a free estimate
